Helpful advice: how to choose a tree surgeon for Tilbury hedge removal

Tilbury hedge removal can be a risky undertaking, particularly when the plants you are dealing with are sprawling, tall or spiky. It takes many years’ experience to master the art of safe hedge removal without leading to property damage or injury.

The unfortunate fact is that there are too many so-called hedge removal companies that purport to be ‘experts’. The trouble is they usually lack the qualifications, experience, training or insurance that is so essential, neither do they have the specialist equipment needed to carry out the work safely and effectively. When an uninsured tree worker causes property damage or personal injury, the question of who will be responsible for the damage and compensation arises. The answer will usually be you, the customer which is why it is vital to check out your tree surgeon thoroughly.

Tilbury Hedge Removal: how it works

There is quite a lot involved in hedge removal, especially for large, well-established, thorny or spiky hedges. To begin with, we cut the hedge back as far as possible using specialist, extra-sharp cutters that glide effortlessly through the thick, woody branches. We’ll then dispose of the leaves and branches and then get to work on removing stumps and roots of the hedge so that it does not grow back.

Tilbury Hedge Removal: ALL species of hedging covered

Our Tilbury hedge removal service is suitable for all sizes and species of hedging plants. Wherever your hedge is situated, even if it is in a hazardous location, TH Trees possesses the knowhow and experience to carry out the work safely and thoroughly.

The following are just a few of the hedging plants Tilbury residents regularly ask us to remove:

  • Common box (Buxus). Box hedge can grow to heights of 12 metres if left unpruned and can be prone to various diseases and pests. If your box hedge cannot be salvaged because it has not been cared for properly, or you just want to remove it for any reason, you can depend upon TH Trees.
  • Privet (Ligustrum). Privet is a widely grown deciduous hedge that can withstand poor soil and shade. Because it is fast growing it is common to see it getting of control if not pruned regularly. If you have a need to remove a privet hedge of any size, we can assist.
  • Alder (Alnus glutinosa). Leave an alder hedge to grow without regular pruning and it could grow as high as 20 metres. Alder hedging is prone to alder dieback. This can lead to dead branches and bleeding from the bark. Whilst diseased alder can be treated, it must be dealt with early for the best chance of success. Should you need an alder hedge removed, you can leave it to our knowledgeable team.
  • Beech (Fagus sylvatica). Beech is a popular specimen hedging tree with either green, purple or copper leaves. Regular pruning helps it maintain its leaves year round. However, if your beech hedge is suffering from the likes of coral spot, heart and root rot or beech bark disease, or it is blocking light, we can safely remove it for you.
  • Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa). Also known as ‘sloe’ after its small purple summer fruits, blackthorn is a thorny hedging plant with pretty white spring flowers. Silver leaf is a fungal disease that can affect the wood and leaves of blackthorn and may eventually lead to the death of the branches. We can treat your blackthorn hedge if you wish to bring it back to health, or if you prefer, we can remove it.
  • Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna). Also known as Mayflower, this deciduous hedge does not respond well to over-pruning and is susceptible to various pests together with leaf spot and fireblight, a bacterial disease that can make the plant look like it’s been scorched by fire. If your hawthorn is not looking its best then you can ask our experts to prune the affected parts out for you, or we can remove the whole hedge if that is your preference.
  • Conifers and pines, including yew, cedar and Leyland cypress are all used widely to form tall privacy hedging. Renowned for growing to soaring heights of up to 100 metres, these hedging trees pose no problem for our team should you wish for them to be removed.
  • Other deciduous and evergreen hedging such as hornbeam, hazel, field maple, crab apple, bird cherry and wild cherry as well as ornamental and flowering hedges including holly, lilac, false acacia (Robinia) and bay laurel are all on our can-do list for Tilbury hedge removal projects.

Need to identify your hedging plant? Our Tree ID pages should prove helpful, and if you are looking for information on common diseases and pests affecting hedging plants, then our guide to common tree diseases is a useful read. Please feel free to get in touch if you think your hedging may be diseased, as there may still be time to save it and you may not need to have it removed after all.

Hedge Removal Tilbury – when is the best time?

Hedge removal should not be carried out at certain times of the year. Firstly, the bird nesting season must be avoided by law. This runs from February to August. Outside of this period we will always check for nesting before proceeding with any hedge removal, just to be on the safe side. If the hedge is posing an immediate risk however or is diseased, we can usually go ahead.

If you own or manage a countryside hedgerow then you will need to check whether it is protected before doing anything.  If it is then you will need to make an application to remove it or carry out any sort of work on it. There’s more information on the protection and management of countryside hedgerows here.
