What to consider when hiring a tree surgeon for hedge removal in Grays?
When you use a tree surgeon for Grays hedge removal, you should always apply due diligence and check that the qualifications they purport to have are a match for the work being carried out. These are the reasons why…
Hedge removal in Grays or indeed anywhere else is a hazardous job, particularly when dealing with expansive or particularly tall plants such as conifer or yew hedging. Many years of experience are required to master the craft of safely removing a hedge without causing property damage or personal injury.
Sadly there are far too many so-called hedge removal companies claiming to be ‘experts’. However, in reality, you will soon learn that the majority have no qualifications, experience, training or insurance and do not own the specialist equipment required to do the job safely. Envisage what would happen if during the removal of your hedge, a large part of it fell onto a neighbour’s property, or worse still, onto a passer-by or a member of your family.
With no valid insurance, the company would not be able to cover a claim for compensation and damages. Instead the liability would fall to you. Without the correct qualifications, the company will NOT have undertaken the correct training for the job in hand. Do you really want to take such a risk?
Grays Hedge Removal: how is it done?
Hedge removal can prove quite a complex task, particularly for larger, established hedges, thorny or spiky-leaved plants or hedges made of up tall trees such as conifers and pines.
The hedge must first be cut back as far as possible using specialist cutters designed specifically for tackling thick, woody branches. The discarded leaves and branches will need to be cleared and disposed of.
Once that’s all done, the stumps and roots that are left behind need to be dealt with otherwise the hedge will start to regrow. It’s also necessary to remove everything so that the land left behind is nice and flat and ready for you to do whatever you wish.
At T.H. Tree Services, our Grays hedge removal service covers ALL of the above, leaving you with a clear, neat and tidy piece of land and NO mess.

The following are just a few of the hedging plants we have removed throughout Grays and surrounding areas:
- Common box (Buxus) – this UK native evergreen species can reach heights of 12 metres if left unpruned and is also prone to a large number of diseases and pests. If problems have not been pruned out and the plant cannot be saved, we can remove it for you.
- Privet (Ligustrum) – a popular deciduous hedge that tolerates poor soil and shade. It’s fast growing and can sometimes get out of control quickly unless it is regularly pruned. If you wish to remove your privet hedge, even if it has grown particularly thick, our experts can assist.
- Alder (Alnus glutinosa) – another UK native plant that has distinctive sticky buds and young leaves. If you leave an alder hedge to continue growing without regular pruning, it could reach 20 metres in height. This hedging plant can also suffer from alder dieback which leads to dead branches and bleeding from the bark. Diseased alder can be treated but it must be caught early for the best chance of success.
- Beech (Fagus sylvatica) – this is a popular specimen hedging tree that you’ll see with either green, purple or copper leaves. If your beech hedge is preventing access or landscaping or is suffering from one of the common diseases that affect this tree such as coral spot, heart and root rot or beech bark disease, we can safely remove it for you.
- Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) – also known as ‘sloe’ after the fruits it produces in the summer. This is a thorny hedging plant that produces pretty white flowers, but some people find the dropping fruits become a nuisance and the spikiness of the hedge is not always appropriate in some settings. Silver leaf is a fungal disease that affects the wood and leaves of this plant, eventually leading to the death of branches. If you prefer to leave your blackthorn hedge intact, we can prune it instead for you and remove the dead branches and treat the rest of the tree to counteract the disease.
- Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) – another popular deciduous hedging plant more commonly known as Mayflower. Sometimes, if a hawthorn hedge has not been properly pruned, its shoots will cross over and become congested, which is not good for the health of the plant. In addition, over-pruning can lead to serious problems. Hawthorn is prone to various pests as well as leaf spot and fireblight, a bacterial disease that can make the plant look like it’s been scorched by fire. If this has happened to your hawthorn, we can prune the affected parts out for you if you would prefer to keep the hedge. Otherwise we can remove the entire hedge for you.
- Conifers and pines, including yew, cedar and Leyland cypress – many people use these towering trees as privacy hedging on large estates. Of course they are renowned for reaching soaring heights, sometimes up to 100 metres. However, hedge removal at any height is never a problem for the experts at T.H. Tree Services.
- Other deciduous and evergreen hedging including hornbeam, hazel, field maple, crab apple, bird cherry and wild cherry as well as ornamental and flowering hedges including holly, lilac, false acacia (Robinia) and bay laurel, to name just a few.
If you need to identify your hedging plant, our comprehensive Tree ID pages should prove extremely useful. In addition, if you are looking to spot a disease or pest infestation then our guide to common tree diseases should prove helpful. You are welcome to get in touch if you believe your hedging may be subject to one of these diseases, as it may not yet be too late to save it and you may not after all need your hedging removed if that is your preference.
When is the best time for Grays hedge removal?
There are certain times of the year when hedge removal must be avoided. First of all, any non-emergency hedge removal must not be carried out during the bird nesting season which in the UK is February to August. We will always check for nesting birds outside of this time, just in case, before proceeding with any hedge removal. If the hedge is posing an immediate risk however or is diseased, it is often allowable to go ahead.
If you own or manage a countryside hedgerow then you will need to check if it is protected before you do anything and if it is, you’ll need to make an application to remove it or do any kind of work on it. There’s more information on the protection and management of countryside hedgerows here.
