What trees are suitable for crown reduction?
Whether your trees are located on public or commercial land, in a residential garden, or in a risky location such as by a railway line, close to overhead cables or on the waterside, our experienced tree surgeons at TH Trees Ltd have the knowhow and specialist training required to do the job safely.
Tree crown reduction is most popular in Tilbury for the following tree species:
- Oak – English or common oak, sessile oak and holm oak
- Willow – white willows, crack willows, weeping willows
- Ash – if we identify signs of ash dieback when carrying out tree crown reduction in Tilbury then we will formulate an expert action plan to deal with it
- Fruit trees – pear, plum, cherry and apple trees all benefit from expert pruning as this encourages a strong branch structure to support the fruits. Light crown reduction often works best.
- Conifer trees and pine trees – yew, cedar and Leyland cypress trees grow to towering heights. Not a problem though for our experts.
- Eucalyptus trees – including the cider gum tree that grows in large numbers along the Essex coastline.
- Beech trees – these bushy canopies benefit greatly from crown reduction.
- All other deciduous and evergreen trees – from silver birch trees and hornbeam trees to elder trees, elm trees, lime trees, maple trees, sycamore trees, rowan trees, elm trees, whitebeam trees, spindle trees and aspen trees. In other words, tree crown reduction Tilbury wide can be undertaken across all species of trees thanks to the expertise and experience of our specialist tree surgeons.

Common tree diseases to look out for in Tilbury
We always carry out a comprehensive appraisal of all trees before going ahead with crown lifting. This allows us to check for disease or infestation present that could affect the health or safety of the tree.
Some species of trees are more susceptible to disease, fungi and pest infestations. Some of the most common UK tree diseases are ash dieback, chestnut blight, Dutch elm disease and oak decline. Sadly though there are many more that are prevalent.
If you are concerned that your tree may be suffering from a disease, fungus or pest infestation, our guide to common tree diseases should prove a helpful resource. If you have any particular concerns, get in touch with us for individual advice. The quicker your tree is treated, the better chance it will have of fully recovering.
What is the optimum time to reduce the crown of a tree?
Tree crown reduction should be avoided when the tree is actively growing. This is usually late spring to early winter. The reason for this is that growing trees bleed sap when cut, and this attracts bugs which bring diseases.
If there is an urgent need for tree work however, perhaps to prevent branches falling or to benefit the health of the tree, we will usually proceed, but with caution.
The bird nesting season is another time to avoid any sort of tree pruning. This season runs from February to August. The law states that no tree work can be carried out whilst birds are nesting unless there are urgent requirements, for example dangerous branches need to be removed or disease or infestation need to be dealt with.
Always appreciate that certain tree species are actively growing at different times of the year, so be sure to check the correct pruning time for your individual tree. Consulting our news and tree ID pages will help you work out the optimum time to prune your particular tree, or you can contact us for bespoke advice.
You should also consult the local authority TPO register to find out whether your tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). If it is, then the volume of crown reduction permitted will be restricted and you will need to obtain permission from your local authority to go ahead with the work. Be prepared as this can take up to eight weeks to come through.
