Specialists in Tree Crown Lifting Tilbury
Tree crown lifting is one of our most popular services. Tilbury home and landowners who wish to maintain the height and aesthetic appeal of their tree whilst removing the issue of low-hanging branches often opt for crown lifting.
How does tree crown lifting work?
Tree crown lifting works by removing the tree’s lower branches, pushing the canopy upwards. The tree’s height is maintained, it’s just the lower reaches of the tree that change. Crown lifting is good for trees growing close to power cables, public highways or buildings, or where the public need to walk underneath the tree safely.
Tree crown lifting promotes good tree health as it allows more light and air to get through.

What trees can you cover for tree crown lifting in Tilbury?
Our Tilbury tree crown lifting service is suitable for all types of trees and we have experience with all species and sizes. It doesn’t matter where your trees are located, from residential gardens to commercial land or more risky sites like watersides, railways or public highways, the fact remains that we are qualified and experienced to tackle them with the core aim of ensuring your trees remain healthy and aesthetically pleasing.
Tree crown lifting works particularly well for the following species of trees:
- Oak – all species such as English or common oak, sessile oak and holm oak of any height
- Willow – including crack willow, white willow and goat willow
- Ash – during ash tree crown lifting we look out for ash dieback. If we spot it, we’ll provide you with an expert plan to deal with it.
- Fruit trees – including pear, plum, cherry and apple. Fruit trees need professional periodical pruning including light crown lifting to promote a robust branch structure so that the heavy fruit crops are well supported.
- Conifers and pines – including yew, cedar and Leyland cypress. Conifers and pines are renowned for reaching towering heights of up to 100 metres, although this never poses an issue for our specialist tree surgeons.
- Thorny or spiky trees – including hawthorn, blackthorn and the monkey puzzle tree. Some tree companies refuse to carry out crown lifting on spiky trees. That’s not us though; we are ready to tackle anything.
- Eucalyptus trees – including the cider gum tree that grows in abundance along the Essex coast.
- Beech trees – regular pruning is advisable for the beech tree as promotes leaf retention year-round, especially useful if you are using it as privacy hedging.
- Other deciduous and evergreen trees – including silver birch trees, hornbeam trees, lime trees, maple trees, sycamore trees, rowan trees, elm trees, whitebeam trees, spindle trees and aspen trees. Whatever tree that needs crown lifting, we can deal with it.
If you need to identify a tree, our Tree ID pages should prove helpful.

When is the best time for tree crown lifting?
Tree crown lifting should be avoided during the bird nesting season. This runs from February to August. We always check for nesting birds outside of this time to be on the safe side as it is an offence to disturb them. This only applies to non-emergency tree work though. If there are hazardous branches or the tree needs immediate attention to combat disease or infestation then we can proceed with caution.
In addition, tree crown lifting should not be carried out whilst the tree is actively growing which is usually during late spring to early winter. This is because during the active growing season, trees bleed sap when cut. Sap attracts bugs which bring diseases to the tree.
Again, we can undertake emergency tree work at any time, however we do endeavour to wait until the tree is in its dormant phase. This phase will vary depending on the species of tree. Our news and tree ID pages provide advice on the best time to prune your particular tree. You can also contact us for tailored advice.
You will also need to consult the local authority TPO register if your tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). If it is, then the volume of crown lifting allowed will be limited and you will need permission from your local authority to go ahead which may take anything up to eight weeks to be granted.
