Certain trees which are of notable interest are often subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). This will limit the amount of pruning which is allowed, and you’ll also have to permission from your local authority to carry out any tree surgery work. The arboriculture department of your local authority will be able to check the TPO register. If permission is required to undertake the works then you will be required to submit an official application through the local authority. This could take up to eight weeks for approval.

In addition, if the tree is located in a conservation area, special permission will also be required before any tree surgery work commences.
