Tree Pollarding Grays

Are you looking to control trees that are causing a hazard, perhaps by a roadside? Tree pollarding is a service that is often requested by local authorities seeking to boost safety along public highways. It involves removing the crown of a tree, leaving only the main trunk system. It is not always the best option in a domestic setting, so if you are a residential homeowner with trees that need controlling, please contact us for advice on the best way forward.

Tree Pollarding Explained

We use tree pollarding Grays wide to maintain the height of a tree so that it does not continue to grow any taller. This method has been in use since medieval times.

Once pollarded, a tree will continue to grow, but very slowly. Its growth rings will reduce in size following the pollarding, making this a long term fix. It’s a process that’s beneficial in situations where trees are growing on roadsides and their canopies are stretching into the public highway and colliding with high-sided vehicles or buses. It’s also useful where trees are growing close to overhead power lines or railway lines and it is important to prevent the canopy from causing a hazard.

If you have a tree in your Grays garden with a canopy that has outgrown its space, it may be better to opt for crown lifting or tree reduction as these will control the size of the tree whilst maintaining its attractive appearance.

A guide to getting the timing right with tree pollarding in Grays

There are certain times of year when tree pollarding should be avoided.

The first is the bird nesting season. This runs from February to August. At T.H. Tree Services, we always check for nesting birds at ALL times of the year just to make sure we are not disturbing our valuable wildlife.

It is not permitted to carry out tree work including pollarding during the bird nesting season, although this is only applicable to non-emergency tree work. If there are impending hazards such as decaying branches that could fall and cause damage or personal injury, or the tree needs urgent attention because of disease or infestation, then we can proceed at any time of the year.

The second is the active growth period. Trees are usually within their active growth period between late spring and early winter. During this time, if any cuts are made, they will usually bleed sap. This attracts bugs, which bring with them diseases which can infect the tree. Again, it is acceptable to go ahead with emergency tree work at any time, however where possible it is always best to hold back until the tree goes into its dormant phase. It is worth knowing that certain tree species go into their dormant period at different times. Have a read of our news and tree ID pages for advice on the optimum time to prune your tree, or contact us for bespoke advice.

You will also need to check the local authority TPO register if your tree is of notable interest or if it is located in a conservation area. If it is protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) then the quantity of pollarding permitted will be limited and you will require permission from your local authority to proceed. This can take up to eight weeks to come through.
